What Is Gapless Playback?

Gapless playback removes the short silence that normally appears between two tracks. When it is on, the last note of one song flows straight into the first note of the next, with no pause, no click, and no tick.

It matters most for music that was mastered to be heard as one continuous piece:

  • Live recordings and concerts, where applause and crowd noise carry between songs.
  • DJ mixes and continuous sets, where one track is beat-matched into the next.
  • Classical works, where movements are meant to run together.
  • Concept albums, where tracks fade or crossfade directly into each other by design (for example, The Dark Side of the Moon or Abbey Road).

Without gapless playback, these albums get interrupted by a tiny gap at every track boundary, which breaks the flow the artist intended.

How to Enable Gapless Playback in Evermusic

Gapless playback is off by default, so you turn it on once and it stays on.

  1. Open Evermusic.
  2. Go to the Settings tab.
  3. Tap Audio player.
  4. Tap Gapless playback.
  5. Turn the Gapless playback switch ON.

That’s it. The change saves immediately and applies to everything you play next.

Note: When gapless playback is on, crossfade playback is turned off automatically. The two features do opposite things — crossfade overlaps and blends the end of one track with the start of the next, while gapless preserves the exact audio and simply removes the gap between them. You use one or the other, not both.

How to Use Gapless Playback

Once it is enabled, there is nothing else to do — it just works. For the best experience:

  • Play a full album or a continuous playlist in order. Queue the whole album, press play, and let it run end to end.
  • Keep the tracks in their intended order. Gapless matters between adjacent tracks, so shuffle is less relevant for a concept album or a live set.
  • It works for local and cloud files alike. Whether your music is stored on the device, on a cloud drive, or on a media server, Evermusic starts preparing the next track early so the handoff is seamless. For remote sources it simply begins buffering a little sooner.
  • It works with lossless and lossy formats, including FLAC, Apple Lossless (ALAC), MP3, AAC, and more.

How Gapless Playback Works in Evermusic

Here is what happens under the hood, in plain terms.

Evermusic’s playback engine keeps two tracks in play at the same time: the one you are hearing (the current entry) and the one queued after it (the next entry).

  1. The next track is prepared early. While the current track is still playing, Evermusic fetches, decodes, and pre-buffers the next track in the background. By the time the current track ends, the next one is already decoded and ready to play — there is no “loading” pause.
  2. The output never stops. The engine’s render loop continuously pulls audio samples from a shared buffer and sends them to the speakers or headphones. This loop does not stop at a track boundary.
  3. The handoff happens between samples. When the current track reaches its final sample, Evermusic switches the source to the next track inside the player, not inside the audio stream. The output buffer keeps flowing without interruption, so the switch happens in the space between two audio samples — far too small for the ear to detect.

Because the transition happens at the sample level on a buffer that never pauses, there is no silence to insert and no decoder to restart at the boundary. That is what removes the click, tick, and gap.

Why It Is Real Gapless Playback

Some apps only simulate gapless playback. Evermusic’s is the real thing, and here is the difference:

  • It is sample-accurate, not a crossfade. Crossfade hides the gap by overlapping and fading two tracks together, which changes the audio you hear at the boundary. Gapless keeps every sample of both tracks exactly as mastered and simply removes the silence between them.
  • There is no decoder restart gap. Many “gapless” implementations still pause briefly to open and decode the next file. Evermusic decodes the next track ahead of time, so there is nothing to wait for at the boundary.
  • No silence is inserted. Some encoders and players add a few milliseconds of padding between tracks. Evermusic’s continuous-buffer handoff means no padding is added on playback.
  • Nothing is re-encoded. Your audio is untouched. Gapless is achieved by how the tracks are scheduled and buffered, not by processing or re-compressing the sound.
  • It works everywhere. Because it is built into the core playback engine, gapless works with local files, cloud drives, media servers, lossless and lossy formats — the same seamless result across all of them.
